Web Design for Mobiles
Mobile Tablet iPad Web Design

The Mobile Internet
It was hard for me to imagine the mobile internet. I remember when my first computer was a 486 processor with DOS as the operating system. The big deal in our household was that it was a Pentium processor and could run Windows for Applications (known as Windows 3.x). We had no Internet at the time, but I could do reports and then print the result on a dot matrix printer.
??????????? Then along came Windows 95 and the Internet. At this time, there still was the Netscape web browser (for those people who are too young to remember Netscape, it was the precursor to Firefox). The Internet continued to grow and grow, and then we had the dot COM crash. Next laptop computer were the big thing, and when I went to work we were all required to have a laptop. Within just four years, the laptop is slowing being phased about for the tablet. An increasing number of children use their tablet or iPad in preference to their parent’s TV.
??????????? Now the web has to change. Many people, like my neighbours, don’t even own a regular pc. My neighbour has his iPad and he just likes to browse the Internet. For people like my neighbour, mobile web design and tablet web design will have to consider that users will increasingly use mobile devices to browse the web. Does that means web development for mobiles will have to include big buttons, forms, and option panes so that the user will be able to click on those controls in a web page? There was no mention of this in our newsletter: Web design for your customers needs Sunshine Coast from February 2012.
??????????? Links will also have to be touch screen friendly. Sure the user can always zoom in on the web page, but I can tell you that it’s a lot easier to use a website that takes mobile into consideration when it’s being designed. I think back to someone like my father who might have a lot of trouble zooming in on a web page just to click a hyperlink. In fact, he’s more inclined to just simply visit a different website. More on Mobile websites.
??????????? In order for web designers to stay competitive it will be necessary to have a responsive web design that will deliver feature rich content that displays correctly on the mobile platform. That means the web page should be able to determine the size of the screen that the user is using and render the web page that will look attractive and interactive for the user. People will appreciate it when all they have to is tap a play icon to see a video instead of getting a message about not having flash installed on their device. More on Responsive websites
??????????? HTML5 and CSS3 are giving us exciting opportunities for web development for mobiles. The technologies are cross platform which means a web page can look correct on a desktop, iPad, or Android phone. We sure have come a long way from the 486 Pentium PC that I remember having, but with mobile continuing to rise in popularity, it’s great to see web designers taking mobile user’s needs into account. mCommerce is gaining in popularity and savvy companies are resigning their online shops to be responsive and display easily on mobile phones iPads and tablets.
